Local sport focus of new art trail

A new art trail on the north side of the Percy Treyvaud sports facility construction site is celebrating sports loved by local school children.

Extending over 100 metres between Quentin and Chadstone roads, the colourful trail is the work of 250 Prep to Year 6 students from the nearby Malvern Valley Primary School.

To create the art trail, and in keeping with the site being the location of a new sports facility, students were asked to share a drawing of themselves playing their favourite sport.

The result is a delightful mix of artworks representing a wide range of activities – everything from netball to swimming, gymnastics to cricket, football to running, and many others. Horse riding is even represented - being a favourite of several budding artists.

Following a tour of the art trail last Friday, City of Stonnington Deputy Mayor, Cr Melina Sehr attended the school assembly to thank the students for their work.

"Touring the art trail I was delighted to see all the incredible drawings representing so many the different sports," Cr Sehr said.

"It was also very pleasing to see the number of students who shared their love of netball, basketball, tennis and cricket – sports it will possible to play at the new Percy Treyvaud sports facility.

"With the new facility due to open in early-2024, the local community, children and adults alike, will soon be enjoying first class facilities for netball, basketball, tennis, cricket, lacrosse and lawn bowls – a win for the community and local sport."

Cr Sehr thanked Malvern Valley Primary School for agreeing to participate in the art trail project and the school's art teacher, Mr Gillies, for his help coordinating the works.

A very special thank you was extended to all the students for their wonderful drawings, without which the art trail would not be possible.

The Percy Treyvaud sports facility is a $40m investment in local sport that will provide new facilities and clubrooms for the existing tennis, lawn bowls, cricket and lacrosse clubs, and deliver a new facility to accommodate high ball sports such as netball and basketball.
