Local sporting pavilion doubles in capacity

Melton City Council has marked the official opening of the much-anticipated extension and refurbishment of the Brookside Community Pavilion.

The $1.5 million upgrade has seen the much-loved facility almost double in social capacity, creating an accessible space where more community activity and greater participation in local sport can take place. Today, City of Melton Mayor Cr Goran Kesic and State Member for Western Metropolitan, Cesar Melhem, officially opened the new extension. It includes a modernised pavilion that has increased capacity from 70 people to 120 people, and upgrades including a large kitchen, increased social space, change room refurbishment including female friendly change rooms, a new meeting room and transformation of the façade.

Cr Kesic said the refurbished pavilion would serve a fast-growing local sporting community.

"With this new infrastructure in place, we now hope to see a greater uptake in memberships and participation in sports, increasing the activity of our local residents and having a positive impact on both mental and physical health," he said.

"This upgrade has created a wonderful asset for our community, and I look forward to seeing it being used and enjoyed to its full potential."

The project was funded with a $850,000 grant from the Victorian Government through their Growing Suburbs Fund and $686,000 from Melton City Council.

The Growing Suburbs Fund is designed to quickly respond to the pressures experienced by fast-growing outer suburban areas like the City of Melton.

"I would like to extend my thanks to the Victorian Government for their support of this project, and the substantial funding they provided through the Growing Suburbs Fund," Cr Kesic said.

"Their generous contribution has provided us with the opportunity to deliver this wonderful project, creating a more connected and accessible recreation hub for our residents."

Melton City Council has been successful in securing funding in every round of the Growing Suburbs Fund since it first began in 2015.

"We have a great record of positive partnerships with the State Government and I'm looking forward to continuing to work to deliver quality infrastructure that keeps pace with our city's rapid population growth."
