Major upgrades are now complete at one of Western Australia's most dangerous crash sites in the City of Cockburn thanks to the Australian Government's Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) and Roads to Recovery programs.
The upgrade, spanning 1.7 kilometres between Branch Circus and Bartram Road, has expanded Hammond Road into two lanes in both directions and made way for the installation of new roundabouts at key intersections on Bartram Road, Carmel Way/Darlot Avenue and Hird Road.
Shared paths were also installed on either side of Hammond Road, between Branch Circus and Bartram Road, along with on-road bicycle lanes and raised central median islands.
Underground services were repositioned to suit the new road alignment and improvements were also made to the street lighting, landscaping, retaining and noise wall structures along Hammond Road.
The $22.6 million project was jointly funded, with $4.1 million from the Australian Government, more than $9.4 million through the WA Government's Metropolitan Regional Roads Program, and over $4.8 million from the City of Cockburn - with more than $4 million in developer contributions.
The LRCI and Roads to Recovery programs help local councils deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects across Australia to improve safety and keep communities connected.
