Malaysian Artist Explores Material and Memory in Shellharbour

Shellharbour City Council is inviting the community to experience Woven Traces, a new exhibition by artist Zara Collins that reflects on creativity, experimentation and the stories held within textiles.

On display at The Imaginarium in Shellharbour Village from 6 to 8 November, Woven Traces showcases work developed during Collins' month-long residency at Rimbun Dahan in Malaysia.

Drawing inspiration from the residency's Malay Traditional Textile Collection, Collins has created an intimate collection of experimental works using paper, metal and found materials.

The exhibition explores themes of memory, touch, time and transformation, offering a glimpse into a practice evolving beyond traditional ceramic forms.

"Woven Traces offers visitors a fascinating insight into Zara Collins' creative journey and the ways travel, culture and new experiences can inspire fresh perspectives and artistic exploration," Shellharbour City Mayor Chris Homer said.

"The exhibition highlights the value of embracing experimentation and curiosity, while sharing a unique body of work with our community."

Collins said the residency allowed her to step away from expectations and embrace a process of discovery.

"This body of work emerged from a period of creative freedom and curiosity," Collins said.

"By responding to traditional textile forms through fragile materials and experimental processes, I was able to explore ideas that have opened up entirely new directions in my practice."

As part of the exhibition, Collins will present a free artist talk on Sunday 8 November from 2pm to 3pm, sharing insights into her residency experience and reflecting on the value of slowing down, embracing uncertainty and making without a predetermined outcome.

The exhibition will be open daily from 10am to 4pm from 6 to 8 November at The Imaginarium. Entry is free.
