Man Arrested in Stolen Vehicle Crash in Fitzroy North

A man is in custody following a crash in an allegedly stolen vehicle in Fitzroy North this morning.

Police Air Wing spotted a grey BMW wagon travelling at high speeds in Southbank about 1.30am.

The vehicle was allegedly driving approximately 120km/h in a 40km/h zone and failing to stop at red traffic lights in Richmond.

Highway patrol officers attempted to intercept the BMW on Nicholson Street, Fitzroy North but the car didn't stop.

Police disengaged and Air Wing continued following the car.

The wagon crashed into a coffee shop at the intersection of Nicholson Street and Miller Street.

A 43-year-old man of no fixed address was arrested and taken to hospital for observation under police guard.

He is expected to be charged with theft of a motor vehicle and multiple driving, drug and weapon offences.

The BMW is believed to have been stolen in Highett on 8 June.
