MCA Northern Territory Launches Grounded In Strength

The Minerals Council of Australia - Northern Territory Division (MCA NT) has today launched Grounded in Strength, a practical strategy for improved policy and investment settings to secure a stronger, more resilient Northern Territory.

MCA NT Executive Director Cathryn Tilmouth said the Northern Territory was at a critical moment as global demand for minerals intensifies.

'The minerals industry underpins regional prosperity in the Territory, with every mining job supporting an additional six jobs across the wider NT economy,' Ms Tilmouth said.

'Grounded in Strength is about building on those foundations. When we invest in the minerals beneath us, we build a stronger and more prosperous future for all Territorians.

'Territory minerals are essential to modern life and to the Territory's economy. With 19 mining projects in the pipeline worth $6.6 billion and the potential to support thousands of regional jobs, acting quickly and decisively will supercharge mining investment in the NT,' Ms Tilmouth said.

Grounded in Strength outlines four industry priorities:

  • Support projects from discovery to production, through stronger regulatory capability, digital systems and coordinated project facilitation
  • Unlock strategic common-user infrastructure, including investment in energy, transport, logistics and digital connectivity
  • Strengthen regional communities, by growing local procurement, improving liveability and supporting Aboriginal-owned businesses
  • Develop a safe and skilled local workforce, with expanded training pathways, VET in Schools programs and regionally delivered skills development.

The strategy highlights the minerals industry's existing contribution to the Territory, including $4.4 billion in annual direct spending, support for more than 770 Territory businesses and $691.6 million spent locally, alongside significant investment in rehabilitation, community partnerships and essential local services.

The strategy also outlines how closer collaboration between industry, government and communities can address high operating costs, infrastructure gaps and long project timeframes that stop mines going ahead.

Grounded in Strength is available now.
