McGuinty Remarks on Canadian Armed Forces Day

National Defence

The Honourable David J. McGuinty, Minister of National Defence, issued the following statement today in recognition of Canadian Armed Forces Day:

"As we mark Canadian Armed Forces Day, we pause to honour the extraordinary Canadians who have chosen a life of service to our country. Today, we recognize not only what they do, but who they are: dedicated professionals, leaders, neighbours, friends, and family members who answer the call to serve whenever and wherever they are needed.

Whether responding to natural disasters at home, supporting communities in times of crisis, or serving on operations around the world, members of the Canadian Armed Forces embody courage, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to others. Their service reflects the very best of Canada.

Military service asks much of those who choose it. It demands resilience in the face of uncertainty, strength in moments of hardship, and a willingness to place the needs of others before their own. It often means long periods away from loved ones, missed milestones, and personal sacrifice that few Canadians ever see. Yet our service members continue to serve with dedication, professionalism, and pride.

Because of their commitment, Canada is stronger, safer, and more secure. Their efforts help uphold our values, strengthen our alliances, and contribute to peace and stability around the world. At a time of growing global challenges, their service remains as vital as ever.

Today, we also recognize the families who stand behind every member in uniform. Your support, sacrifice, and strength make service possible, and our nation is deeply grateful.

To all current and former members of the Canadian Armed Forces: thank you. Your service inspires us. Your sacrifices will never be forgotten. On behalf of all Canadians, I extend my deepest gratitude and profound respect for all that you do-and all that you have given-in service to our nation."
