European Democracy In Spotlight At EU Days Lund

Lund University

On 2-3 November, around 700 Swedish and international participants will gather in Lund for discussions on Europe. EU Days Lund has established itself as Sweden's leading forum for EU issues, bringing together decision-makers, researchers, ambassadors and civil society representatives to discuss democracy, the rule of law and the future of Europe.

European issues are high on many people's agendas at a time of geopolitical unrest, climate challenges and tougher global competition. In this year's programme, democracy, the rule of law and Europe's future are central themes linked to other major issues for the future, such as trade and competitiveness, Europe's defence and security, the Arctic, geopolitics and Sweden's role in the EU.

These are issues that are interconnected in various ways: How does the EU uphold its democratic values when the security situation changes? What significance do democracy and trust have for Europe's ability to make long-term decisions? And how can Europe simultaneously strengthen its competitiveness and address climate and environmental challenges?

For Lund University, the role of universities in democracy and international knowledge collaboration are central elements of the discussion.

- A strong Europe needs both a strong democracy and free access to knowledge. Universities contribute through independent research, critical thinking and environments where different perspectives can meet and be tested. At the same time, international cooperation is crucial for tackling cross-border challenges. EU Days Lund gives us the opportunity to bring knowledge into the conversation about the choices that will shape Europe's future," says Erik Renström, Vice-Chancellor of Lund University.
