Million dollar find as drone intercepted in Townsville

  • More than $1million of contraband seized after drone intercepted

Queensland Corrective Services officers have intercepted an attempt to bring more than $1 million of contraband into Townsville Correctional Complex by drone.

The downed drone was located by eagle-eyed officers containing illicit and prohibited drugs, syringes and a mobile phone.

QCS officers secured the device and its contents, and the Queensland Police Service attended the scene on 17 May.

The Corrective Services Investigation Unit, Queensland Police Service is now investigating and anyone with information is being urged to come forward.

General Manager Townsville Correctional Complex, acting Chief Superintendent Silvi Baretta said officers' diligent adherence to security search practices resulted in the find.

"Thanks to the vigilance and actions of our officers, this drone and its contents was stopped before it could threaten the safety of officers and prisoners," Acting Chief Superintendent Silvi Baretta said.

"QCS has zero tolerance for contraband and anyone attempting to operate a drone over correctional facilities faces two years imprisonment.

"Not only does contraband pose a substantial safety risk, it threatens our ability to deliver meaningful and targeted rehabilitation to prevent reoffending and keep communities safe.

"I commend our officers for their professionalism and commitment to the good order and safety of Townsville Correctional Complex."
