The Minns Labor Government has confirmed that construction on a new, much needed high school for Macquarie Park will get underway next year after years of delayed action and broken promises by the former Liberal National government.
New designs have been released giving a first look at the high school to be built in Macquarie Park, with further detailed designs to be shared with the local community in the coming months.
The new high school will cater for 2,000 students and includes indoor and outdoor sports courts and play spaces; general and specialist classrooms; a multipurpose hall; a canteen and administration facilities.
The school will have the full use of the site, which had previously been earmarked as a mixed development integrated with shops and apartments in an experimental, unprecedented proposal by the Liberals and Nationals.
Construction is scheduled to start in 2026 with the new school expected to be completed in 2028.
Together with the new Midtown Macquarie Park primary school, which is under construction and due to open Day 1, Term 1 2027, the Minns Labor Government is ensuring families in the growing area will have access to both a local primary and high school offering a world class public education.
With increasing demands for public recreational facilities in the area, the new school's indoor and outdoor sports courts, playground and hall will be able to be shared with the community outside school hours.
This new school is one of a number of major projects the Minns Labor Government is delivering in the surrounding area, including:
- New public primary school for Macquarie Park at Midtown
- Major upgrade for Ryde Secondary College
- New community sports facility on the former Marsden High School site
- New high school for Melrose Park
- Major upgrade of Melrose Park Public School
- Conversion of former Meadowbank Public School into new public open space
The Minns Labor Government is delivering these projects as part of our plan to rebuild public education, with the 2025-26 Budget delivering record education funding including $9 billion for new and upgraded schools.
Acting Minister for Education and Early Learning Courtney Houssos said:
"I am pleased to announce that the Minns Labor Government will deliver a stand-alone, state-of-the-art public high school for 2,000 students in Macquarie Park.
"We know families have been left frustrated and fatigued after a decade of flip-flopping by the Liberals and Nationals, who delivered nothing after announcing an experimental project that was never going to work.
"This community has waited far too long for a new, desperately needed high school but now, under the Minns Labor Government, we can now give families certainty - this school will be built, with construction to start next year."
