Monash awarded for excellence

Monash University has won two awards in the Australian Financial Review Higher Education Awards 2020.

The Global Immersion Guarantee program won the International Education category, which the judges said was "hugely valuable".

According to the AFR, one of the judges said: "There is nothing like the overseas experience to widen the mind of students".

The GIG program is a ground-breaking study opportunity including a funded overseas experience for all first year Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Global Studies, Bachelor of Criminology, Bachelor of Media Communication, Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Politics Philosophy and Economics and related double degree students.

Monash's Science Faculty also won the Education Technology category for a joint initiative with La Trobe University, called Lightboard Studios.

The device, described by the AFR as a "stand-out winner", is a clear blackboard teachers can draw on, which is then beamed to students in a virtual classroom.

Teachers can draw diagrams and write formulas, and the image is electronically adjusted so the viewers can read them.

The AFR said the judges found the visual output had a clarity that was hard to believe and took the ancient concept of chalk and a board and sent it light years into the future.
