A new primary school at Tarneit in Melbourne's west has officially been named before the 2023 school year starts.
Minister for Education Natalie Hutchins today announced the primary school will be known as Karwan Primary School - when it opens its doors to students in Term 1, next year.
The school has been named after Bunurong word "Karwan" (pronounced kar-wan), which refers to the nankeen kestrel bird.
The name acknowledges the importance of Aboriginal histories and cultures, as well as reflects on consultation with the local traditional owner group as part of the school naming process.
The name also ensures the school has a clear and distinct identity in the local Tarneit area.
Karwan Primary School will cater for more than 500 students from years Prep to Grade 6 students.
Since 2014, the Andrews Labor Government has invested $12.8 billion in building new schools and more than 1,850 school upgrades, creating around 17,400 jobs in construction and associated industries.
The Labor Government is now also ahead of schedule in delivering 100 new schools between 2019 and 2026, with 75 new schools opening between 2019 and 2024.
