National Windrush Day - 75th Anniversary

University of Huddersfield

22nd June marks the 75th Anniversary of the arrival of the ship HMT Empire Windrush, carrying 492 Caribbean migrants to the UK. The ship and passengers have symbolic status as the start of the Windrush Generation.

Patrick Vernon OBE led a campaign in 2018 to recognise the day to acknowledge the Windrush generation's contribution to UK society today, following the Windrush scandal. The first day of remembrance took place that year. You can find out more about the history of Windrush through Windrush 75, as well as the Windrush scandal itself through the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants.
