New affordable housing developments underway near Wanneroo town centre

  • Shaw Road and Principal Street projects will increase housing diversity and affordability for families, couples, seniors and singles
  • The projects are expected to contribute about $13.3 million in economic activity and support 34 jobs during construction
  • Construction has begun on two new affordable housing developments near the heart of the Wanneroo town centre.

The Hastings Quarter project features seven lots for development - two of which are well underway. Now Living was selected to construct 20 affordable apartments at 8 Shaw Road, while Terrace Homes WA will deliver 12 affordable townhouses at 11 Principal Street, Wanneroo.

The McGowan Government, through the Department of Communities, is improving the diversity and variety of housing options in the established community of Wanneroo.

The department will provide an alternative to traditional larger lot, single detached housing in the suburb with innovative apartments, townhouses and terraces for families, couples, seniors and single occupant homebuyers.

The Principal Street development will increase home ownership and affordability in Wanneroo with 10 dwellings to be sold on the open market and two townhouses allocated for social housing.

The Shaw Road development will provide quality apartments to accommodate residents of all ages and family types, with 14 dwellings to be sold on the open market, two allocated for social housing and four for shared home ownership.

Both sites are expected to be completed in 2021. The remaining five lots will be developed and released over the next five years, subject to market demand.

As stated by Housing Minister Peter Tinley:

"The McGowan Government is delivering on its vision for high-quality, diverse and affordable homes that are connected to job opportunities, transport and amenities.

"The Hastings Quarter project is a great example of this ethos, with a prime location near the Wanneroo town centre.

"Residents of the Shaw Road and Principal Street developments will enjoy a more connected lifestyle with homes only 400 metres from parks and schools.

"The Wanneroo Central shopping centre offers retail and services just 250 metres away, and residents will be able to access high frequency bus services along Wanneroo Road to travel to Edgewater and Joondalup train stations, as well as to the Perth CBD."

As stated by Wanneroo MLA Sabine Winton:

"These projects will benefit Wanneroo locals in many ways. The Shaw Road development is expected to contribute approximately $8 million in economic activity and support 20 jobs during construction.

"Similarly, the Principal Street development is expected to contribute around $5.3 million in economic activity and support approximately 14 jobs.

"By working with private sector developers like Now Living and Terrace Homes WA, we will continue to create vibrant communities with people at their heart, enabling more Western Australians to have a place to call home."
