New era as Governor Chris Dawson is officially sworn in

  • Former WA Police Commissioner becomes Western Australia's 34th Governor
  • Sworn in as the Queen's WA representative today
  • Premier thanks former Governor the Honourable Kim Beazley AC for his significant contribution to the State after more than four years in role
  • A new era begins in Western Australia today with Chris Dawson APM being sworn in as the State's 34th Governor.

The occasion will be marked at an official swearing in ceremony at Government House.

Chris Dawson's appointment as Governor follows Her Majesty The Queen's approval of the Premier's recommendation and endorsement by Cabinet in April.

Mr Dawson has a long and distinguished career in law enforcement. He started as a WA Police cadet in 1976 and served in country and metropolitan positions across a range of portfolios, rising to the role of Deputy Commissioner in 2004 and Police Commissioner in 2017.

He has also served as Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission, and as Director of the Australian Institute of Criminology.

The Queen's Birthday Honours List in 2002 saw him awarded the Australian Police Medal for distinguished service.

Mr Dawson played an integral role in WA's management of the COVID-19 pandemic. He co-ordinated the State of Emergency and served as the State's first Vaccine Commander - a role that saw WA achieve the best COVID vaccination rates in the nation.

He replaces the Honourable Kim Beazley AC, who served as WA's 33rd Governor for more than four years.

Mr Beazley's tenure was marked by his focus on championing WA's interests and his commitment to making Government House more accessible to the general public.

During his time, he held 835 official functions, welcomed 607 callers, hosted 140 patronage organisations and granted Royal Assent for 175 bills passed in Parliament.

As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:

"Chris' dedication, integrity and humbling nature are wonderful attributes that will shine through his role as he continues to represent the WA community.

"His values, beliefs and experience he brings to this role will ensure he continues to advocate in the best interests of all Western Australians be it through trade and investment, attracting people to WA, educating and growing a WA workforce, health, community safety and showcasing our fantastic regions.

"This is even more important as Western Australia continues our Reconnect WA mission and puts our open and strong economy on the world stage - highlighting WA is the best place to invest, study, work and visit.

"I would like to thank our former Governor the Honourable Kim Beazley and Mrs Susie Annus for their dedication for more than four years and send my best wishes to them."
