From the spring semester of 2026, Karolinska Institutet will offer a new commissioned education course in gynaecology for nurses.
The course responds to a growing need for advanced knowledge in women's health and provides participants with the opportunity to develop both their clinical skills and quality improvement work in healthcare.

'Many nurses encounter patients with gynaecological conditions on a daily basis, yet their basic training in the subject is often limited. With this course we aim to strengthen nurses' knowledge and confidence in meeting these patients,' says Sofia Alsing , midwife and course director at the Department of Women's and Children's Health at KI .
Distance-based education with broad content
The course is delivered online, equivalent to 7.5 credits at quarter-time pace, and can easily be combined with regular work. Content covers a wide spectrum: from common diagnoses such as endometriosis, cysts and fibroids to nursing care in gynaecological surgery and abortion care. Menstrual health, menopause, infertility, female genital mutilation, sexual violence, and LGBTQ perspectives are also included.
A key feature of the course is that participants will conduct a quality or improvement project directly linked to their own workplace, enabling them to apply new knowledge in practice.
Part of a national initiative
Interest in further education in gynaecology for nurses is growing across Sweden. Next year, similar courses will be launched at other universities, reflecting the urgent need for expanded expertise.
'At KI, we are proud to contribute to this development. By strengthening nurses' competence, we can help improve care for women and for all patients with gynaecological conditions,' says Sofia Alsing.
