Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) is pleased to progress with work on the playspace that has been in planning phase for the village of Brocklehurst for some time. DRC staff have now engaged Moduplay to supply the play equipment following thorough community engagement and feedback activities on site. The community consultation identified the appropriate and preferred area to install the playspace, identified the variety of play equipment desired and shade considerations.
The new playspace has been made possible through a partnership with the NSW Government's Stronger Country Communities Fund Round 3 ($80,000) and DRC contribution of $40,000.
Dubbo Regional Council Mayor Mathew Dickerson said staff have put a lot of work into developing this site. "The new playspace will be a wonderful addition to the village. I'm pleased to hear that staff have taken the time to listen to the residents of Brocklehurst and design the new space to fit their needs. Staff have hosted on-site pop up engagement sessions and consulted with local residents about the location and design elements. We feel confident residents are going to be very happy with their new playspace," said Councillor Dickerson.
The new playground will consist of a capital combination unit packed with activities that provide a range of play experiences such as climbing, sliding and imaginative play. The low-level balance trail will provide functional play and is made of Australian cypress timber which is resistant to rot and is also termite proof. The freestanding voice tube provides an element of mystery to the area. The play area considers all abilities within the community and includes an A-frame nest swing; inclusive play saucer; and portions of softfall strategically located beneath high-wear zones.
Member for Dubbo Dugald Saunders MP said playgrounds make wonderful additions to our villages. "Playgrounds give kids the opportunity to develop their motor skills, test their physical limits, explore, and build their independence and self-confidence," said Mr Saunders.
"I'm thrilled the families of Brocklehurst will soon have access to a designated play space, right there in the village.
"I commend the staff at Dubbo Regional Council for consulting with the community to achieve the best possible outcome – I can't wait to see it!"
Council will be planting advanced trees to provide shade in the future. Work will be complete by the end of August 2022.
Council is aware that this site has experienced water management issues, and designs are being completed in-house to mitigate site issues for the future.
