New School Bus Zone To Improve Safety At GRSC

A new dedicated school bus drop-off and pick-up area has been established on the eastern side of Merrigal Street between Day Street and Merrowie Street at Griffith Regional Sports Centre.

New School Bus Zone Only signage has been installed and will take effect from 1 October 2026.

The new arrangement includes a 60-metre Bus Zone, operating from 8.30am to 3.30pm on school days only, and a 30-metre No Stopping Zone near the northern corner to maintain clear sightlines and improve safety.

The new bus zone can accommodate up to four buses at the same time, providing a safer and more organised area for school bus drop-offs and pick-ups while helping to improve traffic flow around the Sports Centre.

Griffith Regional Sports Centre patrons can continue to park along this section of Merrigal Street outside of school hours.

The bus zone has been designed in accordance with road safety requirements, including mandatory approach and departure distances for buses, to support safe operation during busy school periods.

Meanwhile, the existing 15-minute town bus route stop on Merrowie Street remains unchanged. The existing 'Bus Zone ¼ P' signs indicate a bus zone where buses may stop or park for a maximum of 15 minutes, providing sufficient time for passengers to safely board and disembark before the bus continues its journey. Cars remain prohibited from stopping or parking in the zone at any time.

Regulatory traffic signs are enforceable and must be obeyed. Motorists who stop or park in a restricted area may be subject to penalties.

The new arrangement will help provide a safer, more organised environment for students, bus drivers and motorists during busy school drop-off and pick-up times at the Sports Centre.
