New Walmer Street Bridge to provide safer connection for pedestrians and cyclists

Liberal Party Victoria

A Matt Guy Liberals and Nationals Government will build a new, much-needed bridge at Walmer Street in Kew. The existing heritage-listed bridge will remain, with the new fit-for-purpose bridge providing greater connectivity and safety for both cyclists and pedestrians.

The bridge is a critical connection point for cyclists and pedestrians across Kew, Abbotsford and Richmond and has seen traffic increase significantly since COVID with currently around 3,000 users per day.

The Liberals and Nationals will deliver the $20 million new bridge in consultation with both the City of Boroondara and the City of Yarra to ensure existing land bridges are upgraded and connected to the new bridge at Walmer Street.

Walmer Street Bridge is a strategic link in Melbourne's bicycle network - forming part of a Strategic Cycling Corridor and identified on the Principal Bicycle Network (PBN) and as a Bicycle Priority Route (BPR). As part of Melbourne's much-loved Capital City Trail, this important strategic link needs to be future-proofed for generations to come and will help encourage sustainable transport options.

Shadow Minister for Transport Infrastructure, Dr Matt Bach, said this commitment is a perfect example of how investing in our suburban infrastructure truly delivers for the local community.

"Investing in this important project will mean a quicker and safer commute for pedestrians and cyclists, not just for Kew and Abbotsford, but across the inner east."

"This bridge is critically important for all locals, but the Andrews Labor Government has sat on its hands and failed to deliver a new, safe and accessible bridge for cyclists and pedestrians."

Liberal Candidate for Kew, Jess Wilson, said this commitment was an important and long overdue infrastructure upgrade for the Kew community.

"The Walmer Street Bridge not only provides a crossing across the Yarra River for commuter cyclists and recreational riders, but for many pedestrians - whether local families, runners or dog walkers."

"The bridge in its current state does not meet the needs of our community. It is too narrow, unsafe for both cyclists and pedestrians to use at the same time and is not fit-for-purpose. A new, purpose-built bridge that meets safety and accessibility standards is needed."

"Only a Liberal Government will deliver this much-needed upgrade of our bicycle network and ensure that local Kew residents will be guaranteed a safer and more seamless journey. I'm focused on getting things done for Kew."

Liberal Candidate for Richmond, Lucas Moon, said this commitment would deliver the infrastructure and investment needed to support the growing population in Abbotsford and Richmond.

"I'm proud to be part of a Liberal team that is focused on backing local communities, making it easier for people to commute and supports improving Melbourne's bicycle network."
