The Nillumbik community saw the official opening of three already much-loved spaces on Friday 29 August: the Diamond Valley Library outdoor space, the upgraded Ryans Reserve in Diamond Creek and Interpretive Signage, Commemorative Plaques and Listening Post at Kangaroo Ground War Memorial Park (KGWMP).
At the Diamond Valley Library opening, Mayor John Dumaresq was joined by Member for Bundoora representing the Minister for Development Victoria and Precincts Colin Brooks MP, Member for Eltham Vicki Ward MP, Member for Jagajaga Kate Thwaites MP, Nillumbik Shire Councillor Grant Brooker, Nillumbik Shire Councillor Peter Perkins, Yarra Plenty Regional Libraries (YPRL) Board Member Robyn Ellard and previous CEO of YPRL Jane Cowell, library staff, volunteers and local students.
Mayor Dumaresq thanked the Victorian Government for their significant contribution to this project.
"We received $438,243 from the Growing Suburbs Fund and $140,000 from the Federal Government via the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program. The project was completed with an additional $75,000 from Yarra Plenty Regional Library and $140,000 from Nillumbik Shire Council," Cr Dumaresq said.
"These works have transformed the outdoor garden and play space, improving accessibility for learning and play.
"The expanded garden and play area means the library can grow its programs and continue building stronger community connections. It's central to this precinct and responds directly to local needs – supporting social inclusion, learning opportunities and wellbeing for people of all ages and abilities," Cr Dumaresq said.
At Ryans Reserve, the Mayor was joined by Member for Eltham representing Minister for Development Victoria and Precincts Vicki Ward MP, Nillumbik Shire Councillor Peter Perkins, Members of the Ryan Family, President of the Rotary Club of Diamond Creek Warwick Leeson and Jean Verso from the Nillumbik Historical Society to celebrate the $1.7m upgrade to the Reserve. The project was made possible through $1.19m funding via the Victorian Government's Growing Suburbs and Council's contribution of $548k.
"The revitalised reserve now features a new major play area, interconnecting pathways, accessible DDA toilets, a shade sail, and enhanced green spaces," Cr Dumaresq said.
"Ryans Reserve isn't just a park, it's a place where families play, kids grow up and neighbours come together.
"These upgrades make sure this space works for everyone, no matter your age or ability. We are grateful for the Victorian Government's support and for Vicki Ward's continued advocacy for projects that benefit our community," he continued.
At the final destination of the day, the unveiling of Interpretive Signage and Commemorative Plaques at Kangaroo Ground War Memorial, Mayor Dumaresq was joined by, Nillumbik Shire Councillor Kim Cope and members the Friends of Kangaroo Ground War Memorial Park Inc. Anna Pelling and Jean Verso.
Mayor Dumaresq acknowledged the contribution of $20,000 from the Victorian Government's Living Local 2022-2023 Funding program and Council's contribution of another $20,000 to the project.
"This funding reinforces the Victorian Government and Council's commitment to preserving and enhancing places of local heritage and historical importance," Cr Dumaresq said.
"The installation of these new interpretive signs and commemorative plaques ensures future generations will continue to connect with the stories and sacrifices of those who served," he continued.
"These recent additions not only honour our veterans and their families but also strengthen our community's ties to its rich history and unique identity," Cr Dumaresq said.
All three openings reflect Council's commitment to creating welcoming, inclusive and accessible spaces that foster community connection, health and wellbeing.
