Nominate Place For Heritage Listing

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

Nominations are now open for the National and Commonwealth Heritage Lists.

For the National Heritage List, this year's focus is places and related stories that have made a fairer, more inclusive Australia.

We are looking for nominations of places linked to:

  • the birth and extension of Australian democracy
  • fairness in the workplace or society
  • migration and multicultural inclusion
  • civil rights and social reform campaigns
  • the advancement of rural and regional Australians' interests
  • women's suffrage and gender equality
  • the struggle for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rights and recognition.

Nominations outside the theme are still welcome and will be considered.

Our National Heritage List already includes several places linked to fairness and inclusion, like the:

  • Eureka Stockade Gardens
  • Victorian Trades Hall
  • Wave Hill Walk-Off Route
  • Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade Route.

Adding more places like these and their related stories to our National Heritage List will honour those who have helped make a fairer, more inclusive Australia. It will ensure future generations understand the journey to make Australia the country it is today and recognise and protect our heritage for tomorrow.

About the National and Commonwealth Heritage Lists

The National Heritage List is Australia's record of the places that shape our national identity. It recognises and protects places of outstanding significance to the nation. This includes places with Indigenous, natural and historic heritage values.

The Commonwealth Heritage List recognises significant places the Australian Government owns or manages.

Anyone can nominate a place for heritage listing.

Nominations must set out the heritage qualities or values of the place. We need to know why the place has heritage value to the nation.
