Campaspe Shire Council is progressing plans to install new artwork at the Echuca War Memorial precinct, incorporating an Honour Roll recognising Armed Service Veterans who were born in the Echuca-Moama region and served in conflicts across all theatres of war.
As part of this project, Council is calling on the community to help ensure the Honour Roll is complete by nominating eligible Echuca-Moama-born Veterans who served in the following conflicts:
- Boer War (1899–1902)
- World War 1 (1914–1918)
- World War 2 (1939–1945)
- Korean War (1950–1953)
- Vietnam War (1962–1973)
- Gulf War (1990–1991) – Naval Forces
- East Timor (1999–2003; 2006–2013)
- Afghanistan (2001–2021)
- Iraq (2003–2009; 2014–2021)
- Syria (2014–2021) – Royal Australian Air Force
While names of Veterans from World War 1 through to the Vietnam War have been previously documented and displayed on now-redundant copper Honour Roll plaques, Council recognises that some names may be missing. Community members and families are encouraged to advise Council of any omissions by submitting a nomination.
Campaspe Shire Mayor Cr Daniel Mackrell said the updated honour roll would be a tribute to those who had served their country during conflicts.
"The honour roll is a lasting record of the local men and women who have served in our defence forces.
"These men and women will always be remembered for their courage, sacrifice, and resilience in conflicts worldwide.
"Through this honour roll, we honour their commitment to defending our freedoms and values – often at great personal cost," Cr Mackrell said.
"If you know someone who fits the eligibility criteria for inclusion on the honour roll, please let us know."
To be eligible for inclusion on the Honour Roll, nominees must meet all the following criteria:
- Be born in Echuca or Moama;
- Have served in the Australian Armed Forces with acknowledged service in at least one of the listed conflicts; and
- Not be recognised on another Honour Roll or Memorial for the same service in another town, city or locality.
All nominations will be assessed against the eligibility criteria prior to inclusion. Nominations may be submitted for both living and deceased Veterans; living Veterans must consent to their inclusion on the Honour Roll.
Nominations can be submitted by completing the online nomination form, or by collecting a hardcopy form from any of Council's customer service centres and returning the completed form to Council at PO Box 35, Echuca VIC 3564.
Council encourages anyone with knowledge of eligible Veterans to participate, helping ensure this important acknowledgement accurately reflects the service and sacrifice of Echuca-Moama-born men and women. Nominations for the honour roll will close on 31 July 2026, with the new honour roll expected to be in place later this year.
