NSW Recovers as Damaging Winds Subside

NSW SES

Roofs have been torn off houses and trees have fallen on buildings and roads, as storm and gale force winds lashed the state.

In the last 24 hours (since 12pm), NSW SES volunteers have responded to 291 incidents. Since the commencement of the poor weather on 1 October 2023, there have been 436 incidents.

NSW SES Assistant Commissioner Sean Kearns said most incidents were for fallen trees and leaking and wind damaged roofs.

"NSW SES volunteers assisted with providing sandbags for a TAFE at Deniliquin and sandbagging of homes and businesses in Albury," Assistant Commissioner Kearns said.

In Narrabri, Moree and Wee Waa, volunteers conducted assessments and assisted after roofs were ripped off buildings.

Volunteers assisted in clearing roads from fallen trees in many parts of the state including Braidwood and Bega.

One of the hardest hit areas overnight was the Northern Zone, where 113 incidents were reported.

Assistant Commissioner Kearns praised the public for heeding safety warnings during the significant rainfall and winds.

"Over the last few days, winds exceeding 120 kilometres an hour and rainfalls of around 70-100 millimetres have been recorded in some parts of the state," Assistant Commissioner Kearns said.

"The fact we have not seen any reports of injuries or rescues is a credit to the community for doing the right thing and not driving through flood waters and making safe and sensible decisions during adverse weather."

At around midday, the Bureau of Meteorology advised severe weather was no longer occurring in the Far South Coast and Snowy Mountains district.

Assistant Commissioner Kearns said while the immediate weather threat has eased, the NSW SES and Bureau of Meteorology is continuing to monitor conditions and is expecting further riverine flooding because of rainfall flowing into NSW from Victoria in the coming days.

A flood watch has been issued for minor to moderate flooding for the Upper Murray, Murray River between Albury and Tocumwal, Mitta Mitta and Snowy Rivers.
