For NSW SES Waverley Woollahra Unit member, Jack Kilavuz, the campaign is more than a call to action, it's a deeply personal mission shaped by family.
The 71-year-old marked his 84th blood donation on Tuesday (5 May), continuing a commitment that began 25 years ago when his father was diagnosed with leukaemia.
"My father lived seven years with leukemia because of the weekly blood and plasma transfusions," Mr Kilavuz said.
After his father's passing, Mr Kilavuz decided to continue donating - a decision which has become part of his routine, giving blood monthly to the Australian Red Cross.
"What began as something very personal has become a lifelong commitment. You realise just how important it is, not only for families like mine, but for the whole community."
Mr Kilavuz has been a member of the NSW SES for seven years, while also volunteering two days a week with the Australian Red Cross. As a senior member of his Unit, Mr Kilavuz is also encouraging fellow SES volunteers to get involved in this year's blood drive.
"It's a great thing to do, for your own health and for your community. Donating blood doesn't take long, but it can make a real difference."
The 2026 Emergency Services Blood Drive officially launched on Tuesday 5 May at the Sydney Town Hall Donor Centre, with NSW SES Commissioner Mike Wassing AFSM also rolling up his sleeves and donating.
"Stories like Jack's are a powerful reminder of why this campaign matters," Commissioner Wassing said.
"NSW SES volunteers are always ready to help, whether it's floods, storms, rescues or searching for missing people, and donating blood is another way they continue to support their communities."
"Last year alone, our volunteers donated more than 600 times, helping to save more than 1,800 lives. That's an incredible contribution, and one we're hoping to beat this year."
Running from May to July, the Emergency Services Blood Drive brings together emergency service personnel from across the country in a friendly competition to deliver the highest number of donations.
