NTEU University of Queensland Branch Statement on Peaceful Protests on Campus

The Branch Committee of the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) at the University of Queensland today passed the following motion:

The UQ Branch of the NTEU condemns yesterday’s violent attack on a peaceful pro-democracy gathering of Hong Kong students and their supporters on St Lucia campus. Threats, intimidation or force against students or staff rallying in defence of democracy and human rights, and acts of racism against any international students, are unacceptable at this university.

We express our solidarity with Hong Kong pro-democracy students and call upon the university to uphold their rights to freedom of speech and assembly on UQ campuses.
