The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and Japan's NTT Corporation are developing technologies for smarter, safer and more secure cities. The work will focus on creating and supporting technologies in sustainability, decarbonisation and innovative networks.

The partnership is expected to create jobs and increase the talent pool in New South Wales. It will also drive NSW's growth by supporting the state's technology export economy.

New technologies the building blocks of tomorrow's smart cities

UTS and NTT will focus on developing smart city solutions using:

  • Telecommunications
  • Cyber security
  • Internet of Things
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Virtual technologies
  • Digital transformation technologies.

UTS and NTT will also work on new R&D technologies. The two organisations hope their work will foster the startup ecosystem between academia and industries.

As a first step, UTS and NTT will conduct a proof-of-concept for a cryptography information-sharing platform. The platform will use NTT's Attribute-Based Encryption technology. The work will be undertaken with Rapido, UTS's Technology development unit.

'We are delighted to start the partnership with UTS,' says Akira Shimada, Senior Executive Vice President, NTT.

'Through the partnership with UTS, NTT Group will promote and accelerate open collaborations and innovations to realise safer, smarter cities in NSW.'
