NZ Police Nab Suspect, Seize Gun in Robbery Bust

Whangārei Police have swooped in and arrested an alleged offender involved in an aggravated robbery at a bar on Friday night.

Investigators worked throughout the weekend, culminating in a Police operation being executed outside an Okara Drive business this afternoon.

Detective Senior Sergeant Michelle Harris, of Whangārei CIB, says a person of interest in the investigation was taken into custody.

"An offender allegedly entered the Kensington Avenue bar at about 10pm and discharged his firearm before demanding money," she says.

"Our investigators have worked some serious hours through the weekend to hold the person responsible for this brazen act of violence."

A 35-year-old man faces serious charges when he appears in the Whangārei District Court tomorrow.

Those include:

- aggravated robbery with a firearm

- wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm

- unlawful possession of a firearm

- discharging a firearm to intimidate

Detective Senior Sergeant Harris says Police will be opposing the man's bail when he appears in court.

"I'm proud of the team's work, which led to today's operation where Police converged on the person of interest, taking him into custody."

Separately, Police have also recovered a firearm allegedly involved in Friday night's offending this afternoon.

"There is no place for callous violence in which puts law abiding members of the public in harm's way - you will be held to account," Detective Senior Sergeant Harris says.

"Police acknowledge the local community who has contacted us with information through throughout the weekend."
