OAS, Rotarians Boost Education in Central America

OAS

The Organization of American States (OAS) today signed an agreement with the Zamora Terán Foundation and Rotary clubs from Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras to promote education, access to sanitation, and sustainable development in the strategic basins of the Central American region, during a ceremony held at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC.

The Secretary General of the OAS, Albert R. Ramdin, said that the initiative is focused on educating youth in new technologies and highlighted the need for support from the private sector. "We must engage the private sector to train young people in areas such as technology and information," said Secretary General Ramdin, adding that the agreement "establishes a framework to develop replicable and scalable models, capable of being adapted to other strategic basins and communities across the Americas, strengthening partnerships to protect shared natural resources and expand opportunities for future generations."

For his part, the Director General of the Zamora Terán Foundation, Enrique Zamora, said the agreement will make it possible to design and implement joint initiatives aimed at promoting education, sustainable water management, youth development, and territorial development in the strategic basins of Central America, such as the Motagua River basin in Guatemala and the Trifinio region, which includes areas of Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. "Our main objective is to invest in education and benefit students and teachers through innovative educational programs and school models conceived as community water management hubs," stated Director General Zamora.

Meanwhile, the Governor-Elect of Rotary International District 4240, which includes more than 50 Rotary clubs in Central America, Antonieta Navarrete, emphasized that "this agreement strengthens us because the support of the OAS gives us greater visibility to achieve our objectives of working in areas such as sanitation and the promotion of peace through the development of our communities."

The agreement provides for joint activities in strategic areas that integrate education, water, and territorial development. These activities will focus on promoting education for water sustainability, strengthening community-based water and sanitation management, developing digital and environmental skills, and fostering youth entrepreneurship linked to the circular water economy. The agreement will remain in force until December 31, 2030, with the possibility of extension.
