Off-duty police officer arrests escapee at Randwick

An off-duty police officer has arrested a man who allegedly attempted to escape custody in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs.

About 5.20pm yesterday (Monday 16 November 2020), a 24-year-old man allegedly ran from a medical facility in Randwick, while being held in Corrective Services NSW custody.

The man was pursued by correctives services officers, before an off-duty police officer intervened and arrested the man.

He was taken back into custody of Corrective Services NSW and charges are expected to be laid.

Eastern Beaches Police Area Command's, Chief Inspector Tracy Ford, said it was a great piece of police work by the off-duty officer.

"Whilst the officer may have been off duty at the time he nevertheless leapt into action when he saw what was occurring. Had the officer not intervened it is likely the inmate would have made good his escape and been a risk to the community," Chief Inspector Ford said.

"Clearly the inmate thought an opportunity too good to be true had presented itself. Unfortunately for him the off-duty officer was in the right place at the right time."
