Pair charged after police pursuit in Dareton

Police have arrested and charged two males after a police pursuit near Dareton, NSW Police say.

About 3.15pm on Thursday 18 January 2018, police sighted an allegedly stolen green Toyota Landcruiser travelling on Arumpo Road, 40kms north of Buronga.

Police engaged in an off-road pursuit of the vehicle, but the male driver and male passenger fled on foot into thick scrub.

An extensive search was conducted by police and a perimeter was established overnight.

It is alleged the two males flagged down another vehicle on Arumpo Road early the next day (Friday 19 January 2018). It will be alleged that they asked the driver for a lift to Dareton.

The driver attempted to slow down when police were sighted before being assaulted by one of the males. The driver stopped the vehicle and the two males fled back into bushland.

Police from Barrier Local Area Command, with assistance from the Dog Unit and Mildura Police, established a perimeter of the area.

Due to the extreme heat conditions, one man surrendered to police. Upon the Dog Unit entering the bushland, the second man surrendered to police.

The men were taken to Mildura Base Hospital and treated for dehydration before being taken to Dareton Police Station.

A 28-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were charged with three outstanding warrants and a number of offences including;

  • Take and drive conveyance without consent
  • Be carried in conveyance without consent
  • Police pursuit – not stop – drive recklessly
  • Malicious damage (x2)
  • Receive property stolen outside NSW (x2)
  • Assault police in execution of duty

Both males were refused bail and will appear at court today (Saturday 20 January 2018).
