Penn State, through the College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST), has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Indian AI Research Organization (IAIRO) to expand global collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI). The partnership will support joint research, faculty and student exchanges and training of early-career scientists, positioning the University at the center of a growing international AI ecosystem.
Effective Feb. 6, the agreement reflects a shared commitment to accelerating innovation in AI through sustained collaboration across institutions, disciplines and national boundaries.
"This partnership creates a powerful platform for high-impact, mutually beneficial collaboration in artificial intelligence," said Vasant Honavar, professor in the College of IST Department of Informatics and Intelligent Systems and a scientific adviser to IAIRO. Honavar leads Penn State's Artificial Intelligence Research Laboratory and the Center for Artificial Intelligence Foundations and Scientific Applications and is the director of strategic initiatives for the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences.
"By bringing together complementary strengths, we can accelerate progress on consequential AI challenges while training the next generation of researchers," he said.
The collaboration establishes a framework for sustained engagement across multiple dimensions:
- Joint research programs spanning foundational and applied AI
- Faculty, student and scholar exchanges
- Co-developed educational initiatives and training programs
- Sharing of scientific materials and publications
- Joint seminars, workshops and academic events
"This is a timely and strategic partnership that strengthens Penn State's global engagement in artificial intelligence," said Carleen Maitland, associate dean for research and graduate affairs in the College of IST. "We are grateful for the support of Penn State Global in making this collaboration possible."
"We could not have achieved this without Penn State Global," Honavar added.
Why This Matters
The partnership reflects a broader recognition that the future of artificial intelligence will be shaped by global, interdisciplinary collaboration, Honavar said. By linking research, education and workforce development, the Penn State-IAIRO agreement aims to build long-term capacity for innovation while ensuring that AI technologies are developed responsibly and for broad societal benefit.
