Perth Action Plan Saves Water Equivalent to 12 Optus Stadiums

  • The second Waterwise Perth Action Plan (Kep Katitjin - Gabi Kaadadjan) is ensuring the health of Perth and Peel's waterways, wetlands, and our environment
  • The plan is delivering 41 actions across 11 agencies
  • Kep Katitjin-Gabi Kaadadjan is part of the Cook Government's response to climate change

The Waterwise Perth Action Plan (Kep Katitjin-Gabi Kaadadjan) has saved Perth and Peel 12 gigalitres of water between 2019-2023 enough water to fill Optus Stadium 12 times.

This is just one of the plan's achievements, which are being celebrated as part of National Water Week, which runs from 16-22 October 2023.

The second iteration of the plan was released in National Water Week last year and so far both plans can claim a range of achievements including:

  • More than 185,000 plantings to reduce urban heat and create biodiversity;
  • Almost 130,000 students participating in Waterwise School Programs; and
  • 41 actions delivered through the collaborative efforts of 11 agencies.

The theme of National Water Week is 'United by Water', with another significant milestone for the plan being the 37 community partnerships to raise awareness of water's importance and to strengthen community connection to local water stories.

The plan has a shared vision with our State's First Peoples, to heal the waterways and develop an approach for delivering enduring waterwise outcomes.

Kep Katitjin-Gabi Kaadadjan (Waterwise Perth Action Plan 2) is the Cook Government's plan to establish leading waterwise communities for Perth and Peel by 2030.

As we face a hotter, drier future because of climate change, it is important that communities work to conserve our precious water resources, to support improved local biodiversity, urban greening, and the cooling of our environment.

The actions in this second plan also reflect the State Government's commitment to deliver water saving initiatives and climate-resilient liveable urban spaces across Perth and Peel.

As stated by Water Minister Simone McGurk:

"The actions in this plan help to conserve our precious water resources, and at the same time, improve water quality, enhance biodiversity, increase vegetation coverage and support remnant bushland to create climate resilient communities.

"The plan also enhances existing waterways and groundwater-dependent ecosystems.

"This National Water Week is celebrating the theme of 'United by Water', and in the spirit of the theme we recognise that strong partnerships are fundamental to the development and delivery of major projects like this.

"I would like to thank our 11 partner agencies and the Traditional Owners for their ongoing support of this important project."
