April marks Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to advocate for child abuse victims and educate to prevent abuse from happening. During the COVID-19 pandemic, child abuse and neglect cases appear to have increased nationwide and resulted in more than 1,700 children dying from abuse and neglect.
To raise awareness, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and Mission Kids Child Advocacy Center teamed up to place 1,026 pinwheels in front of the Middleman Family Pavilion. Each pinwheel represents a suspected victim of child abuse.
"There are many, many children who suffer quietly," says Philip Scribano, DO, MSCE, attending physician and Section Chief of Safe Place: The Center for Child Protection and Health at CHOP.
