Plan Unveiled to Safeguard Lower Gordon River's Heritage

Roger Jaensch, Minister for Parks

A new Recreation Zone Plan for the Lower Gordon River has been developed to ensure management of the area continues to protect its World Heritage values.

Minister for Parks, Roger Jaensch, said the Gordon River has long been one of Tasmania's major tourism drawcards and is a centrepiece of West Coast tourism.

"The river is one of the most popular visitor destinations within the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area and is an important area for West Coast locals," Minister Jaensch said.

The new Plan forms part of the Rockliff Liberal Government's commitment to preserving the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

Measures adopted under the previous Plan such as reduced vessel speed limits and the adoption of new low-wake cruise vessels by tourism operators, have successfully mitigated the erosion of the riverbanks caused by increased vessel traffic and speed through the late 1970s and into the mid-1980s.

These proven measures will continue under the new Plan, along with long-term monitoring of riverbanks.

Minister Jaensch said the new Plan will help protect and maintain the iconic experience of the Lower Gordon River and Heritage Landing so it can continue to be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
