Police arrest man in Alfredton bin

Police with the assistance of Airwing have arrested and charged a man alleged to be responsible for a string of crimes in the Ballarat area.

A patrolling police unit observed a male on the roof of a property in Alfredton about 2pm on 3 September.

The man took off and was followed on foot by police who were checking backyards for the offender.

Airwing were able to notify police on the ground of a heat source coming from a green waste compost bin in a front yard on Prince Street.

Officers opened the bin and located the man they were looking for, who had been hiding in the bin for approximately 45 minutes.

The man was arrested without further incident.

The 28-year-old Ballarat East man has been charged with criminal damage, trespass, theft of motor vehicle and burglary.

He has been remanded to appear in Ballarat Magistrates' Court on 5 September.
