Police charge man after sexual assault in Esperance in 1998

Cold Case Serious Crime Squad detectives charged a 42-year-old man on 17 April 2019, as a result of their investigation into an alleged historic sexual assault that occurred in Esperance in 1998.

On Friday 27 March 1998, a woman in her 20s was at a Hotel located on The Esplanade in Esperance. Just after midnight she left the hotel to walk to her accommodation. It is alleged a car pulled up alongside her and the two occupants of the vehicle engaged her in conversation before they offered her a lift to her home and she accepted.

It will be alleged she was driven to a secluded location off Twilight Beach Road when the driver dragged her from the vehicle and physically assaulted her. It is further alleged he dragged her into nearby bushes where he sexually assaulted her.

In 2019, Cold Case Serious Crime Squad detectives re-investigated this case which lead to the man being identified and apprehended.

The man from West Beach has been charged with:-

• Aggravated Sexual Penetration without Consent; and

• Deprivation of Liberty.

He is due to appear before the Esperance Magistrates Court on 7 May 2019.
