Police charge man after Sunshine carjacking

Brimbank Divisional Response Unit detectives have charged a man following an alleged carjacking in Sunshine overnight.

It is alleged a man armed with a machete approached a woman as she was getting belongings out of her vehicle on Dickson Street about 1am.

The man allegedly threatened her, stole the vehicle and fled the scene in it.

The car was sighted a short time later on Ballarat Road, and with assistance from the Air Wing police followed it to Gisborne.

The driver allegedly dumped the car on Frith Street and jumped over fences at nearby properties.

He was arrested on Beech Court less than an hour after the carjacking.

Police searched the vehicle and allegedly recovered a machete.

The 22-year-old Echuca man has been charged with aggravated carjacking with an offensive weapon, threat to inflict serious injury, aggravated assault, driving at a dangerous speed and possessing a controlled weapon.

He is expected to appear at Sunshine Magistrates' Court later today.
