Police charge man in Flemington after assault

Moonee Valley Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a 34-year-old Flemington man after an alleged assault in Flemington yesterday.

Police responded to an alleged altercation at a licenced premises on Racecourse Road about 10.45am.

Investigators believe a man allegedly produced an edged weapon when confronted over an alleged theft of alcohol.

It is believed a 68-year-old Brunswick man was allegedly threatened and struck in the upper body with a weapon before the man fled the scene on foot.

The 68-year-old man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The man was arrested at a Racecourse Road residential address a short time later.

He has been charged with:

• common law assault

• reckless conduct endangering life

• intent to cause injury

• recklessly cause injury

• possess cannabis

• use controlled weapon

• theft

• assault with a weapon

• commit an indictable offence whilst on bail.

He is expected to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court today.
