Police Charge Man Over $100,000 Facebook Fraud

As a result of an investigation into a series of frauds committed on Facebook, Northern Criminal Investigation Branch detectives have today charged a 24 year-old man with numerous frauds totalling about $100,000.

Police allege that the man would make contact on the social media application Facebook to purchase property, most of which were motor vehicles. The man would meet with the seller and provide them with fraudulent bank transfer receipts as evidence of payment, deceiving the seller in handing over their property. The offending occurred state-wide with an approximate value of $100,000 in goods obtained by false pretences.

The man was detained to appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court today.

Police believe that there may be further frauds that are yet to be reported and are urging victims to come forward.

People are reminded to be cautious when selling goods online, and appropriate steps are taken both to confirm the identity of whom you are selling to, and that payment is received.
