Police charge man over armed robberies at Wollongong

A man will face court today, charged over three alleged armed robberies in the Wollongong area at the weekend.

About 11pm on Friday (5 June 2020), a man entered a service station on Towradgi Road, Towradgi, and allegedly threatened the attendant, demanding cash.

The employee placed cash, cigarettes, and mobile phones in a bag before the man fled.

In a second incident, a man attended a service station on Bellevue Road, Figtree, about 7.30am on Saturday (6 June 2020), and filled a Holden Commodore with fuel.

The man entered the store and threatened the attendant before leaving, allegedly failing to pay for the petrol.

In a third incident yesterday (Sunday 7 June 2020), a man entered a fast food store on the Princes Highway, Figtree, about 1.15pm, and allegedly threatened staff, demanding cash.

He was handed cash before driving off in a Holden Commodore.

Officers from Wollongong Police District commenced an investigation into the incidents.

Following extensive inquiries, a 29-year-old man was arrested at a unit on Carr Street, Towradgi, about 8.20pm last night.

During a search of the man's possession, officers allegedly located a bladed weapon.

He was taken to Wollongong Police Station where he was charged with three counts of robbery while armed with dangerous weapons, two counts of never licensed person drive vehicle on road, and possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit.

The man was refused bail to appear before Wollongong Local Court today (Monday 8 June 2020).
