Police charge man over armed robbery of coffee shop at Tamworth

A man has been charged following an alleged armed robbery at a coffee shop in Tamworth today.

Just after 5.45am (Wednesday 3 August 2022), emergency services were called to a coffee shop on Bridge Street, following reports of an armed robbery.

Police will allege an armed man smashed a window to gain access to the shop, before threatening an employee and fleeing the scene with cash a short time later.

The employee – a 40-year-old man – was taken to hospital suffering shock.

Officers attached to Oxley Police District attended and established a crime scene.

Following inquiries, police arrested a 27-year-old man at a home on Denne Street, Tamworth, about 1.45pm.

A search warrant was executed a short time later at the home, where clothing and a firearm were located and seized for forensic examination.

The man was taken to Tamworth Police Station where he was charged with two counts of robbery while armed with dangerous weapon, not keep firearm safely-prohibited firearm, and take and drive conveyance without consent of owner.

It will be further alleged in court the man was involved in a robbery of a pizza shop on Bridge Street, West Tamworth, on Tuesday 14 June 2022.

He was refused bail and will appear at Tamworth Local Court tomorrow (Thursday 4 August 2022).
