Northern Territory Police have charged a father and son in relation to the seizure of kava at Darwin Airport yesterday.

Detectives from the Drug and Organised Crime Section and members from the Dog Operations Unit intercepted 19kg of kava that was bound for Maningrida.

A 17-year-old and his 53-year-old father were subsequently charged with:

  • Supply Trafficable Quantity of Kava
  • Possession of a Trafficable Quantity of Kava

Acting Senior Sergeant Riva Zio said "The illegal supply of kava is considered to be very serious offending that has long term financial and social implications on remote communities.

"Police actively target these behaviours and will prosecute all persons detected engaging in this unlawful and harmful activity. This behaviour works in complete contradiction to the ongoing efforts of police, government and non-government agencies who work tirelessly to ensure the safety of all community members who reside at and visit our regions."

Anyone with information on the supply of alcohol or drugs to our communities can call police on 131 444 or make an anonymously report to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
