Police update: Concern for welfare - Galiwinku

This morning Northern Territory Police located the body of a 69-year-old woman who went missing from her home on Elcho Island on Sunday. The death is not being treated as suspicious.

An extensive air, land and sea search over the past two days covered more than 100 square kilometres on and around the island.

Acting Superintendent Michael Milde said, "The community was very involved in the search and we worked closely together to try and locate the lady, but unfortunately the outcome was not the one that we had hoped for.

"Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this sad time and my thanks go to everybody who gave their all, searching in difficult and challenging conditions, including police, NTES, rangers, air charter company Nautilus Aviation as well as other local government and non-government organisations who assisted with things such as food donations."

The search team included:

  • Local police members from Galiwinku and Nhulunbuy
  • Local community members
  • Territory Response Group
  • Water Police
  • NT Emergency Service members and volunteers from Darwin and Galiwinku
  • Marthakal Rangers
  • Air assets

Police will now prepare a file for the Coroner.
