The almost 28 year old Port Stephens Mobile Library Service has received a much needed refurbishment thanks to a Library Infrastructure grant from the State Library of NSW, extending the life of the service.
As part of its refresh, the bus has updated computers, new carpet, lighting and furniture as well as improved joinery. The highlight of the project, however, is the incredible artwork designed and painted by Hunter artist, Jordan Lucky.
Jordan shared this is the biggest project he's ever taken on, and that it was a pleasure to design a piece that represents the diversity of the ecosystems across Port Stephens. He also hoped his mural would bring a burst of life to the different areas it visits across the LGA.
Key natural elements of the artwork include the Tomaree Headland, koalas, and orchids specific to the area. Jordan also wanted to capture youthful engagement to inspire the next generation to look at books as a wonderland. This could now be one of the largest rolling murals in Australia, that's introducing kids all over the LGA to the concept of public art.
The outcome of the entire refurb project is to make the Mobile Library service more appealing to a wider audience, which will strengthen its long term viability for the Port Stephens community.
The key outcomes are to create:
- a more inviting, welcoming and contemporary space
- a service that's highly valued by customers
- access to improved technology
- a comparable level of service to that of the branch libraries.
About the Mobile Library
The Mobile Library is an essential part of Port Stephens Library Service and plays a vital role in the community by supporting the information, education and recreational needs of the 74,506 population who currently reside within the LGA.
The Mobile Library visits members of the community living in remote areas within the LGA, providing borrowers a collection of over 10,000 resources, facilitating access to technology with 2 public computers on board, Wi-Fi, scanning, printing, and photocopying services, as well as offering tech-help programs for seniors.
