Portsmouth sees significant rise in national university guide

The University of Portsmouth has seen a significant rise in The Times & The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023 published today (Friday 16 September 2022).

The University rose 50 places for student satisfaction, which contributed heavily to the University's 26-place rise to 62nd in the overall table. Portsmouth is ranked eighth of all universities in the South East of England.

The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide is an established league table that assesses universities based on a number of important criteria, including satisfaction with teaching quality and their wider student experience, research quality, degree completion rates and graduate employment prospects. It provides rankings for UK universities and is one of the most comprehensive overviews of higher education in Britain.

Professor Graham Galbraith

Continued student satisfaction and excellent graduate outcomes have seen us rise significantly in this nationally recognised and important league table. This demonstrates progress towards our long-term ambition to be the top modern UK university and in the top 100 young universities in the world by the end of the decade.

The University of Portsmouth saw increases across these key indicators including improved research quality, as demonstrated by impressive results in the latest REF 2021, and student satisfaction following an excellent National Student Survey (NSS), which placed Portsmouth in the top 35 in the sections of the NSS focused on teaching quality.

Professor Graham Galbraith, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Portsmouth, said: "Continued student satisfaction and excellent graduate outcomes have seen us rise significantly in this nationally recognised and important league table.

"Providing the very best for our students is fundamental to everything we do. It has been a very challenging and difficult period for staff and students over the past two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and this makes it particularly encouraging to see our recent return to normality, now reflected in today's ranking and other recent performance assessments. These demonstrate progress towards our long-term ambition to be the top modern UK university and in the top 100 young universities in the world by the end of the decade."
