Discovery Building takes shape
The latest update from Rothera, our largest research station in Antarctica, where construction work on the new Discovery Building is advancing well as the summer season gets underway. The building is coming into operation as part of a long-term programme of modernisation at Rothera, our largest research station on the continent.
Commissioned by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), as part of the Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme (AIMP), the station has seen a significant public-funded investment for the future of polar science in the region.
The teams have been busy over the past few months since the end of winter to complete crucial infrastructure improvements. Here is a run-down of some of the progress on Rothera Research Station's new Discovery Building:
Following the start of season ice clearing and station preparations, significant progress has been made across multiple areas of work on the new facility, including the open plan office, building systems, and communications infrastructure. The construction team has grown to over 20 people on site, with more deployments planned as work continues towards the milestone of completing the building and handover to British Antarctic Survey (BAS).
Interior spaces
The open plan office is nearing completion, with finishing work now underway on plastered window reveals and fireproof columns. The office spaces have been designed to create a collaborative and supportive work environment for station users.

Building systems are also being commissioned and tested. Insulation work on pipework and installation of monitoring equipment will ensure heating and water systems operate efficiently, providing a comfortable environment and reliable energy performance for those working in the building.
Improving safety and functionality
Installation work in the operations tower has focused on improving safety and usability. New lighting in the stairwell will make movement safer and easier, particularly during periods of low light. Fire safety systems and electrical installations are also being completed throughout the building.

Team on the ground
Construction team members have been arriving at Rothera, with the workforce including a high proportion of returning staff from last season. Some members of the Antarctic Employment Pool are also transitioning to permanent roles at the station, supporting the ongoing modernisation work as electricians, plumbers and carpenters.
The team has been working on bringing equipment and facilities out of winter protection mode and making them operational for the summer season.
Decommissioning
Work continues on decommissioning six existing buildings whose services were switched off at the end of last season, with waste removal underway before dismantling begins.
