Praise for witness as man charged with Burwood assault, NSW

Police have praised the assistance of a witness, after a woman was allegedly assaulted outside her home in Burwood this morning, NSW Police say.

The witness attended Burwood Local Area Command about 1.20am today, reporting his concerns about the behaviour of a man outside a unit block in Park Avenue.

A short time later, an 18-year-old woman arrived at Burwood Police Station suffering bite marks and bruising, allegedly incurred during an assault.

She was checked at the station by NSW Ambulance paramedics but did not require hospital treatment.

Acting on information provided, officers arrested a 26-year-old man a short time later.

He was taken to Burwood Police Station where he has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and assault with an act of indecency.

He has been granted conditional bail to appear in Burwood Local Court on Monday 24 April 2017.

The injured woman did not know the accused.

Police have praised the actions of the witness.

"The man stepped forward and provided valuable information to officers," Inspector Boutouridis said.

"Police rely greatly on assistance from members of the public and this is a clear example of how information from one person can result in a swift arrest," he said.
