Premier's smoke and mirrors housing fix

  • Peter Gutwein touts dodgy numbers to defend inaction on housing
  • Thousands of Tasmanians desperate for secure housing
  • Real action needed to put a roof over Tasmanians' heads
  • Peter Gutwein continues to let down Tasmanians desperately in need of secure housing, using dodgy figures to dodge his responsibility.

Labor Leader Rebecca White said the Premier's claim that the Liberals are building houses as quickly as possible is at odds with the data.

"When the Federal Government forgave Tasmania's $157 million Commonwealth housing debt in 2019, the Housing Minister promised the money would help deliver around 80 new homes a year for people on the social housing waiting list," Ms White said.

"However, the Quarterly Housing Report released two days ago shows just three of those 80 promised homes per year have been delivered with the debt waiver money.

"Not only this but the latest data released last month shows 3,600 families are on the public housing waiting list - an increase of 65 per cent since the Liberals took office - with a 63.4 week wait for priority applicants.

"For the Premier to try to use dodgy figures to try to justify his government's inaction is insulting and demeaning to the thousands of Tasmanians living in tents, the back seats of their cars or on relatives' lounge-room floors.

"And trying to deflect by talking about private building approvals fails to make up for his Government's lack of delivery of much-needed social housing.

"The Premier and his bumbling, incompetent Housing Minister Roger Jaensch need to stop the rhetoric and demonstrate some empathy and action for people who are living without safe and affordable housing."
