Vanderbilt is entering an exciting new chapter under the strategic academic leadership of Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs C. Cybele Raver. Building on the success of her first term, Raver is realigning her leadership team to enhance the university's efforts in research excellence, student opportunities and global impact. These leadership transitions not only reflect the strength of existing leaders, but also pave the way for long-term success, innovation and resilience within the Office of the Provost and the university as a whole.

KEY LEADERSHIP CHANGES
Tracy Sharpley-Whiting steps down as vice provost
Tracy Sharpley-Whiting stepped down from her role as Vice Provost for Arts, Libraries and Global Engagement on June 30, 2025, to return to the faculty. During her tenure, Sharpley-Whiting has made substantial contributions to the university's global engagement, arts and digital preservation initiatives. Her leadership has been vital in enhancing Vanderbilt's cultural footprint and academic collaborations.
"It has been an extraordinary honor to serve as vice provost and to help shape Vanderbilt's global engagement, arts initiatives and the future of our libraries," Sharpley-Whiting said. "I'm proud of what we've accomplished together-expanding international partnerships, elevating the arts on campus and in the community, and strengthening the university's commitment to preserving and sharing knowledge. I look forward to continuing this important work as a member of the faculty, and I remain deeply committed to Vanderbilt's mission of inclusive excellence, creativity and global impact."
Sharpley-Whiting's portfolio will remain within the Office of the Provost and strategically aligned as follows:
- The Vanderbilt University Museum of Art and the Curb Center for Art, Enterprise and Public Policy will remain part of the provost's strategic and financial portfolio but transition administratively into the College of Arts and Science, creating new opportunities for academic integrations and collaborations.
- The Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries and Vanderbilt University Press will report to newly promoted Deputy Provost Tracey George.
- Global Engagement will transition under Tiffiny Tung, vice provost for undergraduate education, unifying the university's global strategy from Study Abroad programs to the role of faculty in building and enhancing global partnerships.
Tracey George appointed deputy provost
In a significant move that underscores her exemplary leadership and deep institutional knowledge, Tracey George has been promoted to deputy provost. In her expanded role, George will assist Raver in overseeing the deans of Vanderbilt's colleges and schools, as well as the Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries, Vanderbilt University Press and the university's online learning initiative. The appointment is a testament to George's commitment to Vanderbilt's mission and her proven track record in fostering academic advancements.
Duane Watson appointed vice provost for faculty affairs
Duane Watson has been appointed vice provost for faculty affairs. Transitioning from his current role as vice provost for special initiatives, Watson will lead programs focused on faculty development, advancement and recognition across Vanderbilt's schools and colleges. His appointment follows the recent establishment of the College of Connected Computing, where Matthew Johnson-Roberson serves as the inaugural dean.

Her continued leadership is crucial as Vanderbilt maintains its strong commitment to undergraduate education and seeks new opportunities for student learning at other locations.
Kosha Tucker continues as interim vice provost for career advancement and engagement
Kosha Tucker will remain in her role as interim vice provost for career advancement and engagement. Her leadership has been essential in guiding Vanderbilt's efforts to prepare students for success in their careers and life after graduation. A national search will be launched in the coming months to identify a permanent appointment for this position.
