Queensland Police Headquarters has gotten a makeover today (Friday, August 25) for Wear It Purple Day.
Wear It Purple Day was founded in 2010 by students to support LGBTIQA+ people and show them they are valued, respected and empowered.
By wearing purple, The Queensland Police Service (QPS) is demonstrating its commitment to supporting and respecting LGBTIQA+ people.
An important part of this commitment is the LGBTI liaison officer program, officers who receive specific LGBTIQA+ training to foster trust and understanding between the QPS and LGBTIQ+ communities.
There are now over 200 LGBTI liaison officers working in police stations around Queensland.
Sergeant Marti Winkworth, a transgender officer hosted a morning tea at Queensland Police Headquarters today.
Marti transitioned before joining the police and credited her wife for her amazing support during her journey.
Marti is now the Queensland Police State Coordinator for the LGBTIQ+ Liaison Program.
